The Brat Suggests More Sites

Our Mayor Elect, Roberto Bratina, is very lovingly referred to as the Brat. I was listening to the Brat on CHCH TVs wonderful website and he said that other TiCat stadium sites could still be considered if Longwood and Aberdeen does not work out. There is a very public drop dead date of 1-Feb-2011, at which point other municipalities will be in the running. The Brat’s reasoning is sound. If other cities are going to start scouting sites (Oshawa, Mississauga etc) then why can’t Hamilton? So if we are still gonna build a house for TiCats then lets build it somewhere less worse than Long and Abbo or Confederation park. I am of the personal opinion that West Harbour should be for housing and more housing.  I don’t like lists and I like playing with GIMP, so here is my pictoral pitch for Kay Drage Park.

Killer Marketing Plan

It really isn’t their fault. The Russel Williams Restaurant has been serving up delicious breakfasts for many decades . Unfortunately the moniker for their shop is the same as that of the stalking fashion categorizing killer Colonel Willy.  In a typically Burlingtonian display of support for our troops the owners will be renaming the Colonel Russel Williams Restaurant to either the Paul Bernardo Bistro, or the Clifford Olson Cafe. In light of the upcoming name change the Russel Williams Restaurant will no longer be delivering their famous breakfasts directly into the bedrooms of their patrons, and they will abandon their tight staff uniform requirements.

Colonel Willy’s Red Friday

The colonel was the pride of Canadian Forces, multi-medaled and promptly promoted. However support for this troop quickly vanished when it turned out that he was killing Canadian civilians instead of Afghani ones. Red Friday is clumsy pro military effort by a private company to try and get real Canadians to wear the colour of blood every Friday.

Brother Andre The Giant Canonized

Finally the great man is being recognized by the Catholic Church! It is wonderful to hear that someone who has contributed to society as much as this caring individual, and everyone’s favorite giant. He charmed us all with his role as Fezzik in the Princess Bride and miraculously held the WWF Champion belt in the same year that he died.

Tail of A Stadium

It just keeps getting worse. The newest, worstest proposal for the Ti Cat Stadium is in the running yet. I am keeping it simple. There are many complex questions that need to be answered in the city’s report. I am simplifying things as much as possible.

1) We are not building a Pan Am Stadium. Pan Am Athletics for Hamilton is long gone. We are building a stadium for the Tiger Cats.

2) If we are gonna spend the money connect it to GO so that the parking spaces can be used every day.

3) If we are gonna spend the money plan it intimately with the proposed 1 billion dollar rapid transit plan.

4) I did not elect either Scott Mitchell or Bob Young.

Present Tiger Cat Stadium does not have either GO connection or decent LRT proximity. But it does have a neat tail.

Tale of Three Pieces

What the hell? Seems like the city is really chatting about replacing an innovation center with a football stadium. Just to put this in perspective we are planning to remove 20 acres of research facilities and job incubators and replace it with a block of concrete that will be used 10 time a year. The symbolism of crippling a University research center for a money losing stadium is profound.

The stadium will never be profitable for the people of Hamilton. It was supposed to be built for the Athletics portion of the Pan American Games. We have noodled away the crown jewel of the Pan American games. Now we scramble to find a way to give a failing entertainment company a $160 million dollar bail out. The only way this can help the people of the hammer is if the stadium doubles as a commuter GO station that can be used every day.

So let’s look at the Aberdeen and Longwood choice. The map is made from best guesses as all the conversation is going on behind closed doors and not even council will know about it until the day they vote. A and L site could be really close to GO transit and reasonably close to proposed LRT. I actually think a GO station near the old VIA rail station or even covering Aberdeen would be a useful legacy for the city. Commuters could drive in from Ancaster, Dundas, West Hamilton to connect themselves to the GO. This still is not as good as the Kay Drage Park location as there commuters could drive up to the GO,  or walk from the proposed Rapid transit. The A and L site is going to cost heaps of money to purchase. This land is all ready to go for other developments.

Here is how the three sites compare on a map. Best location for rapid transit Kay Drage, A and L, then West Harbour. Best location for highway visuals A and L, Kay Drage, then West Harbour. Least traffic congestion Kay Drage (would require ramps from the 403), A and L, then West Harbour. Least damaging place to put 5000 parking spaces Kay Drage (other sites would be tragic). Best site for dinosaurs stuck on a plan from a previously FAILED Commonwealth Games bid West Harbour. Chat from 2003.

The best choice without a doubt is to build GO and LRT and let another city try and bail out the entertainment franchise.
